Baisakhi Festival Essay
India is famous for its rich culture and traditions all over the world. Festivals play an important role in enhancing the glory of India. In India, every day is a day of the festival. Baisakhi is a harvest festival, celebrated on 13th April every year.
In Punjab and Haryana, people enjoy this festival with happiness because Rabi Crop is ready to harvest. In south India 'Pongal' comes during the same period and in north India, 'Makar Sankranti' is celebrated. This festival brings with it merriments. In Punjab, people dance, sing, and exchange sweets. Everybody wears new clothes.
This festival of Baisakhi has many important significances. For Hindus, it is the beginning of New Year, which is celebrated with pious bathing in holy rivers and worshipping. It is believed that the holy Ganga came to the Earth thousands of years ago and in her honor, Hindus gather at the bank of river Ganga to take holy baths.
In Kerala, this festival is called 'Vihu'. People do shopping, buy new clothes and light fireworks on this day. In Assam, this festival is known as 'Bohag Bihu'. Grand feasts, music, and dancing are held on this occasion. On this day in 1875, swami Dayanand Saraswati founded the Arya Samaj, a sect of Hindus, who are worshippers of four Vedas for spirituality.
He condemned idol worship. This day is of great importance to Buddhists also because Gautam Buddha attained enlightenment and Nirvana on this pious day. Baisakhi has a special meaning for the Sikhs. In 1699, Sikh's tenth Guru Govind Singh organized Khalsa. He administered 'amrit' to his five pupils, making them Singhs. So Baisakhi is a day of great importance for everybody.
