Every community has its own festival. Likewise, Christmas is the main festival of Christians. This word Christian is derived from the words 'Criste-Maesse'. Christmas is celebrated on 25' December every year in memory of the day on which the son of God Jesus Christ came into the world.
People go to church, pray to Christ, and light candles. It is a holy day as well as a holiday. For the members of Christian religionists, it is the most pious day. It is a time of fun and frolic. The history of Christmas is about 4000 years old. Many Christmas traditions were followed even before the birth of Christ.
The 12 days at Christmas, the yule log, the bright fires, exchanging of gifts, singing carols, throwing feasts, all can be traced back to the early Mesopotamians. There are many views about the real birth date of Christ. Ancient traditions say that it has been celebrated since the year 98 AD. In nearly 137 AD., the Bishop of Rome ordered that Christ's birthday should be celebrated. Santa clause has become the most popular character attached to this festival.
Children see him as a loving person, who gives them gifts and toys. The history of Santa starts with a man named Saint Nicholas, the Bishop of Myra in Asia Minor. He was well-known for his charitable nature, who gave all his wealth to the poor and needy. He possessed magical powers also. He died in about 340 AD.
From that day, Santa Clause became the symbol of affection and charity among people. Great preparations are made for this festival. Houses are cleaned and decorated with Christmas trees, balloons, jingle bells, etc. People go to church, offer prayer in the memory of Jesus Christ.
People exchange gifts and cakes with each other. The main spirit of this festival encourages people to do the deeds of Kindness, honesty, and charity. It tells that we should do selfless service to mankind like Jesus Christ.
