In India, every day is a day of the festival. They occupy an important place in the religious and social life of the people. There are four biggest festivals of Hindus. Diwali is one of them. The other three are Raksha Bandhan, Holi, and Dusherra.
Diwali is celebrated on the 15th of the Kartik month in all over India. Diwali means 'row of lights'. People have different views about this festival. The most common belief is that on this day Shri Ram Chandraji returned to Ayodhya with his wife Sita and brother Laxman after the fourteen years of exile.
He killed Ravana, the king of Lanka, who Kidnapped Sita in the Jungle. People welcome them by decorating their houses and streets. This is the festival of joy and happiness. Many types of sweets are prepared. People buy Diyas. In the evening, these earthen cups are filled with mustard oil and lighted. Now many varieties of electric lights are available.
Every corner of the earth gets illuminated. One of the main attractions is crackers. Everybody enjoys them. In the evening, people worship Goddess Lakshmi and offer sweets to her. The children enjoy the festival most as they get holidays from school, get new dresses and gifts and light fireworks. This festival is useful in many ways. It comes after the rainy season.
People get whitewashed in their houses. So all insects or mosquitoes are removed. It is believed that on the night of Diwali, Goddess Lakshmi herself comes to the neat and clean houses, and the house is gifted with money. Some people make this festival ugly by gambling. They believe if anybody wins this night, he will be fortunate all the year.
So this evil should be removed and only happiness and joy should be associated with it. It brings new hopes and aspirations. We hope that Diwali should come every year with lots of good luck and happiness.
