The solar system consists of the sun, moon, the nine planets and their satellites, the asteroids, comets and meteoroids, and interplanetary dust and gas.
The sun is the most prominent feature in our solar system. It is the largest object and contains nearly 98% of the total solar system mass. The sun's outer visible layer is called Photosphere and has a temperature of 6,000 °C.
The chromosphere is above the photosphere. Solar energy passes through this region on its way out from the center of the sun. Faculae and flares arise in the chromosphere. The corona is the outer part of the sun's atmosphere. It is in this region that prominence appears.
These prominences are immense clouds of glowing gas that erupt from the upper chromosphere. The Corona can be only seen during complete solar eclipses. The mythological fact about the sun is that the sun is giving its energy for about 4.6 billion years and it has enough fuel to go on for about five billion years more.
It is also said that at the end of life, the sun will start to fuse helium into heavier elements growing so large that it will swallow the Earth.
